The first dietary fat substitute - approved by the Food and Drug Administration Thursday - will hit the supermarket in a few weeks.
Called Simplesse, the substitute is made of egg white and milk protein, says Marci Kaminsky of NutraSweet, its maker. It debuts in a line of frozen desserts called Simple Pleasures, and will be available nationwide by summer, she says.

Despite mostly minor changes expected to be announced today by the U.S. Agricultural Department, the food pyramid has withstood a year-long shakedown, sources say.
A year ago, newly appointed Agriculture Secretary Edward Madigan put the pyramid on hold as a replacement for the "basic four food groups" because he worried that children might not understand it.
